GLENFIELD — As part of National Small Business Week, the Onondaga Small Business Development Center presented Edward Johnson, owner of The Tack Shack, with the Small Business of the Year Award for Lewis County, May 2.
Mr. Johnson, certified farrier, built on his passion for horses to fill a business niche with aid from the Onondaga Watertown SBDC and Naturally Lewis through the Launch Lewis County Microenterprise Grant Program and an IDA Loan.
As a mobile business, The Tack Shack primarily serves the NY Otter Creek Trail system, which spans over 65 miles of equestrian trails. In addition the business caters to equine-related events. In business for nearly a year, The Tack Shack serves as a hub for equestrians, offering supplies and services.
According to Naturally Lewis, Mr. Johnson began his entrepreneurial journey through the agency’s DBA Lewis County entrepreneurship program which provided, assistance with business planning service and an entrepreneurial training course in partnership with the Watertown Small Business Development Center.
“I am thrilled to offer this service to our local equine community as there is no other tack business within 70 miles,” said Mr. Johnson at the time of the business’ grand opening.
“The Tack Shack will offer equine supplies that were not previously readily available to the Otter Creek Horse Trail area. Our inventory will include a variety of horse supplies, so that if a rider forgets something or if something breaks, they can get back on the trails quickly.”
